ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA), Chennai, organized a five-day trainers training programme on “Advanced aquaculture practices for resilient and sustainable development in Odisha” during 24-28 August 2026 at the ICAR-CIBA. Twenty-two (22) participants from the Department of Fisheries, Government of Odisha attended the programme. Strengthening the technical capacity of fisheries department officials to enhancing their knowledge on advanced, sustainable and climate-resilient aquaculture practices relevant to the fisheries sector of Odisha. The training provided a combination of technical sessions, practical demonstrations, hands-on exposure and field visits covering key components of aquaculture production systems, including shrimp and crab hatchery operations, biofloc farming, finfish hatchery management, aquaculture feed production, intensive and super-intensive farming systems, biosecurity, water quality management, sustainable aquaculture practices, economics and advance technologies of CIBA.
Dr. M. Kailasam, Director, ICAR-CIBA, inaugurated the training on 24th August 2026 and emphasized that systematic training and exposure to advanced aquaculture technologies would enable fisheries officials to effectively support farmers and entrepreneurs in Odisha and contribute to the sustainable development of the state’s fisheries sector. Dr. A. Panigrahi, Course Director, underscored the importance of close collaboration between ICAR institutions and the State Governments in promoting scientific aquaculture practices and improving productivity, resource efficiency and resilience. Dr. M. Jayanthi, HoD, CCD highlighted the significance of the programme in facilitating the dissemination of recent advances in aquaculture production technologies and strengthening the technical knowledge of field-level fisheries professionals.
A one-day field visit was organized on 26 August 2026 to a private hatchery and Institute demonstration units located near Mahabalipuram, Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu. The field exposure and demonstration units provided an opportunity for the participants to observe the practical implementation of hatchery technologies under commercial conditions and to interact with technical personnel involved in aquaculture seed production. The visit helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and field-level application by providing direct exposure to operational aspects of commercial aquaculture facilities.
The training programme concluded on 28th August 2026 with a formal valedictory programme. During the session, the trainee participants expressed their appreciation for the comprehensive technical coverage and practical exposure provided during the programme. They highlighted that the training was highly relevant to their professional requirements and stated that the knowledge and skills gained would be applied in their respective field activities to support aquaculture development and provide technical guidance to farmers in Odisha. The valedictory programme was attended by the Director, HODs, course coordinators and technical staffs of ICAR-CIBA. Dr. R. Saraswathy, Principal Scientist, CCD, proposed the vote of thanks and expressed appreciation to the participants, course coordinators and resource persons for their active involvement in the successful conduct of the programme.
