World Intellectual Property Day was celebrated at the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai on 1st May 2025. The objective was to highlight the IP rights to young inventors, creators, entrepreneurs, researchers, and academicians to develop an interest in the Intellectual Property system and creativity. Ms. Scarlet Danielle Grey, Senior Associate, M/s. Anand and Anand, Patent Firm, Chennai delivered a lecture on the topic.
Dr. Kuldeep K Lal, Director, ICAR- CIBA welcomed the guest speaker and delivered the opening remarks. He emphasised that Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) have gained significant importance over the past few decades. It is an important driver and exclusive tool granted for an invention. These rights give creators protection over their work, ensuring that they can gain the economic benefits of their innovations. The economic importance of IPR is far-reaching, as it fosters innovation, attracts investments, promotes fair competition and strengthens national economies.
The Guest speaker elaborated on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), its significance, genesis, voyage so far on IPR, trademarks and copyrights in the developing world. She covered non-patentable subject matters, patentable inventions, provisional and complete specifications of patent applications, patent drafting, PCT applications, expedited examination of applications, Geographical Indications and Artificial Intelligence vis-à-vis IPR. In addition, she narrated distinct aspects of amendments in IP legislations, subject matter of copyrights, designs, subject matter of trademarks, guidance in IP filing, disseminating IP awareness to the public, filing of patents, types of application, related to research and development institutions, advantages of patenting and emerging issues in IPR. She has also provided acquaintance to patent search databases like Google Patents Espacenet, Patentscope, InPASS, USPTO Patent Full-Text and Image Database, Derwent Innovation, Total Patent One, Orbit and PatBase.
Later, she discussed and interacted with all the scientists and technical staffs of ICAR-CIBA, Chennai, MES of CIBA, KRC of CIBA and NGRC of CIBA on IP related issues. Scientists, students and technical officers participated in the interactive session. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks by Dr.P.K.Patil, OIC, ITMU-ABI Unit of ICAR-CIBA.
