Kakdwip Research Centre of ICAR-CIBA, Kakdwip, West Bengal demonstrated the scientific farming of shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) and exhibited the harvested shrimp production among the aqua farmers and stakeholders in its farm at Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on 10.11.21. Shri. Bankim Chandra Hazra, Hon’ble Minister of Sundarban Affairs, Govt. of West Bengal was the chief guest, witnessed the harvest and inaugurated the farmer’s meet. The scientific farming of vannamei shrimp generated revenue of Rs.17 lakhs. During this occasion a farmers interaction meet was also conducted as a part of the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav. About 250 participants comprised of aqua farmers from Sagar Islands, Namkhana, Pathar Pratima and Kakdwip, bankers and young entrepreneurs, women SHG’s and state government officials witnessed the harvest and attended the interaction. The minister appreciated the activities of KRC-CIBA in the state and asked farmers to follow scientific culture technology developed by ICAR-CIBA for vannamei shrimp farming in the region to avoid incurring losses due to disease. He distributed the fish seeds (Orange chromide, milkfish and pearlspot), PolyPlus feed (cost effective feed for polyculture) and CIBA developed products (PlanktonPlus and HortiPlus) to farmers and entrepreneurs. Dr. Debasis De, Officer-in-Charge, KRC-CIBA briefed the research activities of centre and its importance for eastern region of country. He also highlighted the use of cost effective feed technology developed by KRC for P. vannamei culture using mustard oil cake. Dr. Sanjoy Das, Principal Scientist, KRC welcomed the chief guest and farmers for the programme. The event concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Tapas Kumar Ghoshal, Principal Scientist, KRC. Later, Chief Guest and farmers witnessed the harvest of vannamei which generated revenue of Rs.17 lakhs.
