Considering the importance of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and its significance in the aquaculture sector at present a webinar-cum-awareness programme on “Antimicrobial Resistance in Aquaculture – Who is responsible?” was organized by ICAR-CIBA, Chennai on 9th November 2021. Internationally renowned scientist Prof. (Dr.) Iddya Karunasagar, the Expert Member, World Health Organization (WHO) advisory group on critically important antimicrobials for human use was the speaker. About 106 participants including scientists, aqua-professionals, stakeholders, academicians and students both from India and abroad participated in the webinar.
In his talk, Prof. Karunasagar covered a wide range of subjects including basic aspects of antibiotics, mechanism of AMR & its spread and the specific issues pertaining to AMR vis-a-vis aquaculture industry. In his conclusion, he provided various suitable points and way forward regarding the confinement of AMR issues in general and related to aquaculture industry in particular. Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA, in his introductory remark outlined the importance of AMR and averred that this programme will benefit a large number of participants who can gain a lot from the vast experience of a speaker like Dr. I. Karunasagar. Dr. M. Poornima, Principal Scientist, Aquatic Animal Health and Environment Division delivered the welcome address and read out the credentials of the speaker. The webinar was moderated by Dr. Subhendu Kumar Otta, Principal Scientist, Aquatic Animal Health and Environment Division, CIBA. The interacting session was facilitated by Dr. P.K. Patil, Principal Scientist, Aquatic Animal Health and Environment Division where several questions from the audience were answered by the speaker. Dr. Patil also proposed the vote of thanks at the end of the session.
