Poornima. M. Ms. Dr
Designation : Principal Scientist
Discipline : Veterinary Microbiology
Division : Aquatic Animal Health and Environment Division
Specialization : Microbiology
Research areas:
  • Molecular viral diagnostics
  • Vaccines
  • RNAi technology
Brief profile:

After taking masters in Veterinary Microbiology in 1993 and PhD in Veterinary Microbiology in 2007, I am working in CIBA since 2000 on viral pathogens of shrimp and fin fish. I currently work in division of Aquatic Animal Health and Environment Division in CIBA. My research includes interdisciplinary approaches to diagnose pathogens of shellfish and finfish and to develop suitable control strategies. I worked on detection, development of diagnostics for viral pathogens, fish vaccines and RNAi based therapeutics for aquatic animal health management. I have interests to unravel etiology of emerging disease syndromes and development of diseases free broodstock to produce clean virus free post larvae.

Current Research Projects (3 important ones):

NoTitle Funded By
1 Aquatic animal diseases and intervention tools for their managementInstitute
2Identification of etiology of Monodon Slow Growth Syndrome (MSGS) of black tiger shrimp in India and development of rapid diagnostic toolsDBT
3 National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal DiseasesNFDB

Recognitions (National & international level) :
  • Attended NAIP sponsored International Training for three months period ( 24th October 2011 to 23rd January 2012) in the area of Molecular diagnostics (Fisheries)” at Center of Excellence for Shrimp Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (CENTEX SHRIMP), Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Director's Message...
Present day Indian shrimp farming almost entirely depends on aquaculture of exotic white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei .
Sole dependence on a single species cast doubt about the sustainability of Indian shrimp farming.
