Training programme for state fisheries officials on Hatchery production & farming of milkfish and mullets

A need based training programme for the Kerala State fisheries officials on “Hatchery production & farming of milkfish and mullets” from 16th to 20th August 2018. The training programme was inaugurated on 16th July, 2018 by Dr. Baskaran Manimaran, former Vice chancellor, Tamil Nadu Fisheries University. In his address, Dr. Manimaran highlighted the role of brackishwater finfish farming for achieving nutritional security and the nutritional benefits of consuming fish. He appreciated the holistic efforts of CIBA in developing technologies for seabass, milkfish, mullet, pearlspot and other ornamental fish breeding and culture in the development of brackishwater aquaculture in the country. He concluded by stressing the trainees to make the best use of the training and disseminate the knowledge acquired to the stakeholders. He also released the training manual of the training programme.

Dr. K. K. Vijayan, Director, ICAR-CIBA in his presidential address pointed that the purpose of the training programme to state fisheries officials is to train them and to establish a partnership to promote brackishwater finfish farming in the state of Kerala. He also highlighted the infrastructure at Muttukadu experimental station of CIBA which is one of the best in the world and also the advancement made by CIBA in all the important aspects such as seed, feed, health and genetics. Dr. Vijayan pointed out that the presence of vast brackishwater resources in Kerala has immense scope for the expansion of brackishwater finfish farming.

Earlier Dr. M. Kailasam, Principal scientist, Head-in-Charge, Fish Culture Division welcomed the dignitaries and the participants and mentioned about CIBA’s contribution in supplying hatchery produced brackishwater finfish seed to the fish farms and farmers of Kerala. Dr. Krishna Sukumaran, Scientist, FCD briefed about five days training programme, and Dr. M. Makesh, Principal scientist, FCD, proposed the vote of thanks.
