ICAR – CIBA participated in Aqua Aquaria India 2017

ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai participated in the Aqua Aquaria India 2017 organized by Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Government of India at Nehru Maidan, Mangalore during 14-16th May 2017. The theme of the event was “Diversification in Sustainable Aquaculture”.
The dignitaries participating in the event opined that West Coast in general and Karnataka State in particular has enormous potential for aquaculture research and development. Karnataka State has 27000 sq.km of continental shelf, 323 km of coastal line and 5.65 lakh ha of inland water resources has wider scope for sustainable development of aquaculture sector.
CIBA Chennai participated in the exhibition by displaying through posters; aquarium and specimen related to rearing, feed and disease management technologies for shrimps, Asian Sea Bass, milk fish, pearl spot etc. About 3000 stakeholders including farmers and farm women, aqua-preneurs, officials from development departments, financial institutions, teachers and students have visited the stall and interacted with CIBA scientists. The event was inaugurated by Shri Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Government of Karnataka.
About 100 aqua farmers in the West Coast especially from the States of Karnataka and Kerala have shown specific interest for undertaking various activities in brackishwater aquaculture like hatchery, rearing and feed production technologies and sought technical guidance from ICAR CIBA through training programmes, demonstrations etc.
In the technical session under aquaculture, a paper entitled “Way Forward on the Sustainable Brackishwater Aquaculture and R&D Initiatives by CIBA” was presented.
