ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai & Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, Nagappatinam joining hands for undertaking collaborative programmes in research, teaching, and extension in the areas of brackishwater aquaculture by signing a MoU on 25th September 2017 at CIBA Chennai. The mutual agreement was signed by the Dr K K Vijayan, Director, CIBA and Dr G. Jeyasekaran, Director of Research, TNFU in the presence of Dr S. Felix, Hon. Sensitization Training programme on DNA based diagnostic “Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) detection of Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) in shrimp” for the stakeholders of shrimp-farming sector conducted at ICAR-CIBA, Chennai

The high value shrimp aquaculture industry in India is recently being affected by the emergence of a growth retardation problem caused by a microsporidian parasite, Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei or EHP. This problem goes unnoticed for quite some times during the culture practice as no clinical signs or significant mortality. is being associated with. Combined effect of growth retardation and increase food conversion ratio (FCR) force the farmers to bear huge economic loss. Through the surveillance programme, ICAR-CIBA reported the presence of this parasite in the country, for the first time. Subsequently the incidence in the farms showed an increasing trend, and more recently, CIBA detected this parasite from the post larvae procured from some of the hatcheries, and even from one of the imported artemia consignments, thus flagging an alarming situation...........

MOU signed on transfer of Organic shrimp feed Technology (ICAR-CIBA- Shrimp Green FeedBT) by CIBA to Jass Ventures Pvt Limited, Kochi, Kerala, 29-10-2015

The ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai has developed low fish meal based organic feed for the culture of black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon through extensive research and field testing. CIBA has entered into an agreement with M/S. Jass Venture Private Limited for the transfer of this green technology for the culture of organic shrimp. The organic feed has been produced at the CIBA feed mill, which is certified for processing and production of organic shrimp feed by the certifying body, INDOCERT, Kerala in 2013.

In Kerala, brackishwater resources cover an area of around 1,43,696 hectares, along with adjacent low-lying fields and mangrove swamps. In an effort to utilise this huge potential of brackishwater aquaculture resources in the Kerala State, Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Kochi, for conducting joint research for development of a sustainable model of brackishwater aquaculture. As per the agreement, technical assistance will be extended by CIBA for undertaking research and development programmes on diversified brackishwater farming practices in the State in partnership with KUFOS.
