Brief profile:

After completing Masters in Dairying (Cattle Breeding & Genetics) in 1978, I joined ICAR in June 1984. I was awarded Ph.D. in Dairy Cattle Genetics & Breeding in 1986. After working on genetic improvement in fine-wool sheep and rabbits for 14 years, I am presently working in CIBA since 1998, on quantitative genetics of aquatic species. I am currently the Head the Division of Nutrition, Genetics and Biotechnology. I have contributed to the discipline of Animal /Fish Genetics & Breeding. My interest is in genetic characterization, genetic improvement programmes of aquatic species and application of biotechnological tools in improving aquatic species.

  • As a team member in an international collaborative Indo-Norwegian research project (NORAD), reported estimates of genetic parameters for the first time in India in tiger shrimp
  • As a team member in another Indo-Norwegian research project, constructed a linkage map in tiger shrimp using Single Nucleotide Polymorphism marker first time globally
  • As a team member, constructed a SNP based chip in tiger shrimp with 6000 SNPs first time globally
  • As a team member, detected Quantitative Trait Linked loci (QTL) for WSSV resistance in tiger shrimp
  • As animal breeder, I had built up a flock of genetically improved find wool sheep –Bharat Merino, the production of which is at par with exotic fine wool breeds of the world (1985 to 1998)
