The ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture in association with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kattupakkam, Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu organized an awareness programme on efficient and balanced use of fertilizers (including Nano-Fertilizers) on 21st June 2022 at the KVK campus. About 203 participants, mostly farmers from Kancheepuram District, Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) of different disciplines and other staff of KVK attended the programme.
Dr. M. Siddharth, Professor & Programme Coordinator, KVK in his introductory speech highlighted the use and disuse of fertilizers in agriculture. He also insisted the farmers to utilize fertilizers judiciously. Dr. R. Saraswathy, Principal Scientist, Environment Section, CIBA emphasized that use of fertilizers is very expensive and can harm the environment if not used properly. Therefore, application of fertilizers should be based on a-priori soil testing and correct dose at the right time to avoid negative effects to the environment. We should aim to keep our soils healthy and rich in nutrients in order to feed the growing population.
Dr. S. Gangadharan, SMS, KVK, Kattupakkam highlighted that Nano-fertilizers (NFs) are the best alternative to traditional chemical fertilizers as they can increase crop yield by increasing fertilizer nutrient availability in soil and nutrient uptake by plants. Further, it enhances the stress tolerance to achieve higher yields in agriculture. An interaction session was also held wherein the farmers shared their views, doubts and rights were clarified by the SMS of KVK and ICAR-CIBA. Dr. P.K. Patil, Principal Scientist, Aquatic Animal Health Division coordinated the programme and proposed vote of thanks.
