ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIBA), Chennai conducted a five day hands on training on “Biofloc production technology for aquaculture” from 17th to 21st May 2022. About thirteen trainees including progressive farmers and potential aquapreneurs attended the programme. In recent years biofloc technology based nursery and farming of shrimp is becoming popular among the farmers as it is considered as a sustainable intensification of shrimp farming model incorporating the biosecurity protocols. The present training programme was organized to address the issues reported by the farmers who have adopted biofloc technology and provide an insight into the principles of the biofloc farming.
Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA, Inaugurated the training programme and briefed about the importance of biofloc farming practice in the field of aquaculture on 17-05-2022. Dr. Pravin Putra, Assistant Director General (Marine Fisheries), ICAR graced the occasion and wished the training participants all the success in their future ventures. Director, CIBA highlighted that CIBA has come up with several refinements and workable models in the field of biofloc and farmers can adopt these technologies for success in the biofloc farming.
Dr. M. Jayanthi, Course Organiser and Scientist-in-Charge, Crustacean Culture Division pointed that CIBA had conducted several trainings in the field of biofloc over the past and this is the one of the most sought-after training in the institute.
Dr. Akshaya Panigrahi, Principal Scientist & Course coordinator, explained about the inception of the training programme and introduced the various topics to be covered during the training classes. He also mentioned that CIBA has developed, refined and streamlined biofloc microbial consortium “CIBAFLOC” for floc generation and water quality management in the biofloc shrimp/fish nursery cum growout systems. The practical classes were organized at the newly inaugurated biofloc facility of ICAR-CIBA at Kovalam Experimental Station (KES) of the institute.
The valedictory session was organized on 21-05-22, wherein the trainees conveyed their feedback on the training programme and received their certificates.
