ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture organised the Brackishwater aquafarmers meetings on ‘Water and soil quality issues in shrimp aquaculture in the changing climatic scenarios’ with the SCSP beneficiaries at Ellavur, Tiruvallur District, and Mahabalipuram, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu on 17th and 19th March 2022, respectively. Dr. M. Muralidhar, Principal Scientist, Scientist-in-Charge, Environment Section & Principal Investigator, NICRA project narrated the objectives of the meeting and explained the effect of climate change on aquaculture production. Dr. R. Saraswathy, Principal Scientist and Dr. P. Kumararaja, Senior Scientist from Environment Section enlightened the importance of water and soil quality management, respectively in brackishwater aquaculture under changing climatic scenarios. Dr. Satheesha Avunje explained the rationale use of aquaculture inputs for successful culture and sustainable environment. Dr. Kanaga Chidambaresan, Associate Professor, Vel Tech Institute of Engineering and Technology deliberated the importance of online monitoring of water quality parameters in shrimp culture ponds. Dr. A. Nagavel, Chief Technical Officer demonstrated the use of water quality kits developed by the Institute for testing the water parameters at farm sites. During the meetings, water quality kits and farm materials were distributed to the SCSP beneficiaries. During the interaction, farmers actively participated in the discussion concerning the better management practices on water and soil quality management for climate-smart aquaculture. The programme was organised under SCSP component of National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) Project.
