National Girl Child Day (Rashtriya Balika Diwas) is observed on the 24th of January in India to create awareness about the rights of the girl child and the importance of female education, health, and nutrition. Every year the Day is celebrated with appropriate themes aimed at empowering the girl child in diverse walks of life. ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai celebrated National Girl Child Day 2022, as a part of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav 2021-22, by organizing a Selfie with Daughtercompetition in virtual/online mode among the staff and students as per the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Govt. of India. Twenty selfie photographs with a brief note highlighting the achievements of girl child were received from the participants online. Dr. Sherly Tomy, Nodal officer, Women cell & Principal Scientist, coordinated the programme and gave a brief remark on the aim and history of the programme. The certificates and prizes were distributed to the winners and participants during the Republic Day celebrations by Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA. During the occasion, Dr. Jithendran emphasized the relevance of the programme and need for equity and opportunity for girl child and congratulated the children and their parents for their active participation in innovative event.
